Have Your Eyes Checked – A number of serious eye diseases have no symptoms, and early detection is critical.

Quit Smoking – People who smoke are up to four times more likely to develop Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Eat Healthy and Get in Shape – Diets high in fat and low in nutrients increase the risk of developing AMD. Focus on omega-3 fatty acids and leafy greens.

Protect Your Eyes from the Sun – Exposure to UV rays is associated with a higher risk of AMD.

Wear Eye Protection – When playing sports or working with power tools protect your eyes with safety glasses or goggles.

Consider a Vitamin Supplement – If you’ve been diagnosed with AMD talk to your optometrist about high – dose vitamin supplements.

Prevent Diabetes – People with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of vision loss.

Manage Your Diabetes – To lower your risk of diabetic retinopathy it is important to control your blood sugar.

Keep Alcohol to a Minimum – Drinking heavily is a known risk for developing cataracts and other eye diseases.

Educate Yourself – many eye diseases are related to hereditary or ethnicity, so be sure to get to know your family history.
